Her mother Emily Dietrich arrived in the US from Australia on the day investigators revealed that a bone found during one of their searches was consistent with evidence collected containing Zahra's DNA. After being out of touch with her daughter for the majority of the little girl's life, she had finally located her in South Carolina just three days before she went missing. She has told the public that she hopes to return to Australia with Zahra's remains so that she may be buried close to her family. The details of the reason Emily Dietrich was not involved in Zahra's life remain sketchy at best. We do know that she left Zahra in Adam Baker's custody when she was coping with Post Partum Depression, and was later granted visitation rights with Zahra by the court. She has claimed that Adam Baker left town several times with Zahra and she didn't have the means to keep finding him.
Some have commented that Dietrich didn't do enough to find her daughter or that she didn't care. But that's kind of a hard judgment to make. Sometimes parents give up the fight in order to give the child peace in theirs. The bottom line is she lost a child twice at this point, and none can imagine the pain and guilt she must feel.
After the candlelight vigil, held Tuesday night, Zahra's father, Adam Baker, continued to deny any involvement in his daughter's disappearance and death. He avoided attending publicly and instead decided to watch the event on the internet with his mother and lawyer. He has not publicly commented on the allegations wife Elisa Baker, currently held in custody on obstruction of justice charges for writing a fake ransom note in Zahra's disappearance. In letters to friends and family from her jail cell Elisa charges that Adam Baker did something 'kind horrible" after they discovered Zahra dead in her bed.
In a motion filed by Elisa Baker's defense team for a bond reduction from the $1 million she is currently being held on, surprising deatils emerged as to how Baker cooperated with investigators. Her defense claims she led Police to several locations to look for remains, and confirmed specific items of evidence. You can see the full petition here.
So wait a minute...Elisa Baker wants to be rewarded with a bond reduction for pointing out to police places to find a dismembered 10 year old with a prosthetic leg? For real? Holy smokes...here's a cookie ya nut. Pretty sure the judge is going to deny that one. Or reduce the bond from $1 million to $999,999.99.
Interestingly, they must feel that a capital murder charge is on the way because there has been some controversy over her public defender bringing on a capital case attorney at the tax payers expense even though Elisa baker hasn't been charged with murder yet. The prosecutors and defense team will be meeting with the Attorney General's office today to determine if this was an appropriate move by the defense.
So far Zahra's father Adam Baker has not been charged with a crime related to this case, nor has he had any contact with his wife in jail. There also hasn't been an official identification made on the remains found last week in a shallow grave believed to be Zahra.
This has got to be one of the saddest stories to come around since Caylee Anthony, in my opinion. Who loved this little girl? Certainly not her parents. She just looked so sweet in every picture she's shown in, and that little interview she did when she received her hearing aids. Poor thing went through bone and lung cancer, lost her leg, and lived only to die so young. Even when people saw that she was being mistreated by Elisa Baker and called the authorities, nobody saved Zahra. Hopefully she can have the dignity in her demise, that she didn't receive in her lifetime, and justice for her will be served.
