Last week experts had gathered in Lyon, France, at WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer. Experts had examined existing studies along with two unpublished new studies.
Dr. Jonathan Samet, M.D., M.S., working group chair, University of Southern California, commented in a statement, there is a need to watch closely for an association between cell phones and cancer risk. There may be some risk.
Cancer specialists are noting that there is no need for panic among those that use cell phones.
Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer, American Cancer Society, states that when people hear carcinogenic possibility they freak out. The information is not confirmed and warrants more study. He further notes the low-frequency radiation is too weak to damage DNA.
Cell phone usage is currently growing and has been no increase in brain cancer rates regardless of the tremendous use of cell phones, according to Dr. Donald Berry, PhD, of MD Anderson Cancer Center. He further remarks that cell phones causing cancer is just another urban myth.
Dr. Peter Shields, M.D., cancer researcher, Georgetown University Medical Center, notes there are three risk categories: possible, probable and unknown. Radiation from cell phones falls under possible. However, it is nothing like smoking or asbestos. Smoking causes cancer in one out of ten people.
The findings from the research agency will be published in the Lancet Oncology's, July 1st issue and will be online in several days.
