Latin Music Moments of the Year 2008

The Year 2008 in Latin America is not marked by the emergence of any new music style or trend. 2008 has rather witnessed the grandeur of Latin Music in a different way. It is the year when some of the best albums have released and some spectacular musical shows had taken place.

Music to Stop Violence

Many famous personalities like Carlos Vives, Alejandro Sanz and Juan Luis Guerra have sung the song written by Juanes. Juanes gathered all of them to perform on the Colombia-Venezuelan border. Their main intension was to stop the violence between these two countries.

Shakira Opened Schools for Poor Columbian Children

The year is also important in many other ways. The famous pop singer Shakira has opened schools for the poor kids of Columbia. She has also raised her voice regarding some political issues.

Songs Composed for Obama's Campaign

Music has also played a crucial role in Latin America's political scenario. Andres Levin and Andres Useche have composed songs with political motive. In fact these songs have great political impact boosting Obama's voting campaign.

Nostalgic Musical Shows

Shows like "Miami Libre," and "Celia: The Life & Music of Celia Cruz" had successfully taken back the audience in the golden era. Some nostalgic performances reminded the audience of the greatest songs created ever.

Grand Concerts

2008 is the year when grand concerts including Juanes' concert and Juan Luis Guerra concert were held. Juan Luis, the great Merengue revisionist and songwriter once again proved himself. The concerts made the scene clear that Luis alone is enough to dominate the stage and the audience in a live performance.

Global Cuba Festival Night

The last night of the Global Cuba festival created history with the rocking shows by famous bands. Timba and Rumba bands of Miami had made the night colorful with their energetic performances. The two popular bands that have won the heart of the audience are Teimpo Libre and Los Herederos.

Release of MTV Unplugged

2008 is marked by the release of the album "MTV Unplugged" by Julieta Venegas. This album is worthy of mention as it offered the audience a fresh new world of sounds. Though a new release it has already topped many of the trusted music charts. Not only that, "MTV Unplugged" had also earned Venegas huge recognition as the greatest pop performer of the era.

A Music Evening of Colombian Folk Songs

Latin America was also gifted by a unique concert in 2008. Jorge Celedon and Jimmy Zambrano presented a music evening that echoed the Colombian folk-style songs. Audience could also get a glimpse of a little classical collaboration with Miami Symphony and Bogota Philharmonic.

Calle 13's Concert

The Calle 13's concert that took place at Nokia Theater in October was a remarkable music event. The performance by the Boricua duo had left the audience speechless. They brought a new vibe altogether.

Grupo Folklórico y Experimental Nuevayorquino Group

The Hostos Center hosted the reunion concert of Grupo Folklórico y Experimental Nuevayorquino. The concert was rocked with the Nuyorican jazz performance by Jerry Gonzalez. The performance was followed by a Rumba by Pedrito Martinez.

Performance by Buenos Aires

The Latin Music moments of 2008 also recognize the contribution of Buenos Aires, a deejay group. Their performance has enriched the hip hop genre undoubtedly. The craze for these songs is more likely visible among the young crowd.
