Launch My Line Review

As a fan and follower of fashion, I was originally let down by Bravo's new series called Launch my Line. It seemed to be a sellout to the common misconception that just about anybody can be a fashion designer. But, as I began to watch the show from the beginning, and got to know the concept and watch it play out, I have to say my opinion changed.

The premise of Launch my Line is this: take a person who wants to be a fashion designer (mostly meaning they can't sew) and pair them with a person who could be a fashion designer (meaning they are a technical expert) and watch what happens. It is not surprising to see that the ones who have the most success on the show are those who listen to their expert. Some of the wannabe designers act like their experts are idiots, which leads to them being kicked off the show.

Working together, the teams manage to come up with some unique and interesting designs. Especially considering that they had to choose all of the fabrics for their line at the beginning of the season, before they actually sewed anything. The only extras come from a trim room that the experts are not allowed to enter. They get fifteen minutes to shop the room for each challenge.

As the season progresses, the technical knowledge of the wannabe designers should be increasing, and I would love to see an episode where they have to do all of the sewing themselves! Maybe that will happen before the finale. Until then, I am still laughing every time an argument breaks out because an expert can't get their partner to understand that you can't just design whatever you want. It has to be able to be sewn. Gasp!

The only downside to Launch my Line is the hosts. They are apparently fashion designers in their own right, but their flamboyant attitudes and the fact that they dress alike is just super annoying. Oh, did I mention that they are twins? And they dress alike? And by "alike" I mean that they are usually wearing the exact same outfit. That is the kind of hokey gimmick that is not fashion but just show. They are no Nina Garcia in her well-accessorized glory. Still, Launch my Line is worth a watch if you like fashion and drama.

I've never watched this show, but may give it a whirl.
