Laundry Detergent Bottles Are Shrinking:The Prices Are Not

SerenityNene
Lately, prices on just about everything have soared while the quantity has shrunk. The first two things that come to mind thinking about this situation is with ice cream cartons and laundry detergent bottles. An easy way out of not having to pay more when you're getting less with ice cream is simply don't buy it; considering it's a treat and not a necessity. However, laundry detergent is a necessity, and if you want your clothes clean and smelling nice, you have to buy it.

Not too long ago, one could purchase a big bottle of liquid laundry detergent at a fair price. A large bottle of Purex would run approximately $5 or $6 and usually on sale for buy one get one free. A person could get two nice size bottles of laundry detergent for under $10, which would last a family quite awhile. Those days are long gone. In today's market, not only have the prices increased but the quantity of the detergent has decreased. Liquid laundry detergent bottles come in a variety of sizes and scents, with sizes ranging from about 9 oz to 300 oz. Even not so popular brands of laundry detergent have increased in price as well as shrunk their bottles. Understandably, due to production and the economy, changes have to be made. But why should consumers have to suffer? You don't necessarily have to.

There are ways to get around paying a fortune for a small bottle of liquid laundry detergent. A simple solution is the dollar store; where everything, even laundry detergent is $1. Granted, getting detergent from the dollar store may not produce a wide variety of choices and scents that you can find at your local retail store, but buying a not so popular brand can help you save a lot more money. Some brands that are found in dollar stores are Sun and Purex. A 30fl oz bottle of Purex laundry detergent from the dollar store will wash about 9 loads. At CVS pharmacy store, a 50 oz bottle that washes about 32 loads will cost you $7 if it's not on sale. Let's do the math. If you were to buy 6 bottles of Purex from the dollar store, that's $6 for about 54 loads of laundry. More loads washed for a buck cheaper is obviously the better deal. This may not always work if the retail store has the bigger bottles buy one get one free, but in cases where the detergent is not on sale and you're looking to save a few bucks, go to your nearest dollar store. No need to spend more money for anything when you don't have to.

OK yes, the bottles have gotten smaller but there is less water in those bottles of detergent but the caps have remained the same size. Read the back of the bottle for dosing information. In my large top loader I use only the amount for a medium load (which is only about 2 Tablespoons) and my clothing gets clean. I am able to purchase things like Arm & Hammer 96 use bottle on sale for $7. I just keep my eyes open for various sales and stock up accordingly. I am not really brand loyal. I find that purchasing at the dollar store ends up costing more per load. If you combine coupons on top of the sale price you can go even cheaper.
