Laundry Know-how: Make Your Trip to the Laundromat a Breeze

Got Laundry?

Dina Montgomery

If you are one of the millions of people that use a Laundromat to wash and dry your clothes don't worry, there are some easy tips you can learn to make your trip a lot easier. Sometimes it can be a hassle to lug around that heavy bottle or box of laundry soap and also trying to remember which washer or dryer is yours. Try some of these easy tips to keep track of all your clothes and laundry accessories. Once you put these tips to use, your next trip to the Laundromat will be a breeze.

Easy laundry machine identification

My personal experience at the Laundromat wasn't easy for the longest time until I learned this quick and easy trick. I would load my clothes into the washer or dryer to only quickly forget which one was mine. Out of all the machines that look identical, how can you be really sure? Many times I would go to the washer or dryer to open it and to discover that it wasn't mine. I tell you, I got some really dirty looks for that little stunt.

To fix this all I had to do was bring along a few pieces of ribbon. When I would load my clothes into the washer or dryer, I would then tie one of the pieces of ribbon onto the machine. The washer, I just tied it around one of the knobs, while I just tied a bow on the handle of the dryer I was using. Now I don't get any more dirty looks from any of the other people doing their laundry.

Lighten your load

So many times I would have my hands and arms full of detergent bottles or boxes along with the pile of clothes I needed to wash. I would normally have to take two trips back and forth from the car to the Laundromat. Then I discovered a very easy way to carry all that I needed to clean my clothes in one trip.

Instead of carrying that big bottle or box of detergent, try using the new detergent packet gels instead. Some brands of laundry detergent are available in pre-sized gel packets that you can just throw into the washing machine and you're done. Now I only have to carry the amount I need for that trip instead of carrying the whole bottle or box.

Don't forget entertainment

When taking a trip to the Laundromat, you will need some form of entertainment. You don't just want to sit there watching your clothes run through their cleaning cycles. Take a book, laptop, iPhone, or something to keep you busy while your clothes are being washed.

Not only will you keep yourself entertained, you don't run the risk of falling asleep, and believe me, that is not a good thing to do in public. One time I forgot to bring anything with me and I tell you what, it was the longest Laundromat trip ever. Believe me; I will never forget my book ever again.

Try some of these easy tricks for making your next Laundromat trip easier. Not only will you get done faster and with less hassle, you won't dread the Laundromat any more.

Definitely need entertainment when I go to the laundromat. I am like Lori, I go there for the big items: blankets, quilts, etc.

Good tips! Now you just need a photo of a laundrymat...want me to get one and send it to you next time I go by our local laundrymat?

During my laundry-mat days (I lived on a tiny salary - story of my life - in a one-room apt. in NYC), I decided the one luxury I could afford was having the staff at the laundrymat deal with my laundry. Wish I'd had this good info back then; I could have saved some money.

Great ideas. I don't go often but when I do it is a pain, these tips are very good.
