One tip I suggest is to wash in cold water whenever you can. Clothes are less likely to fade. You will also be using less energy. Only use hot water when you absolutely have too.
When it comes to jeans you want to get your moneys worth. You want them to last as long as possible. One trick you can do when it comes to washing your jeans is to turn them inside out before you wash them. This keeps the color stronger and keeps jeans from fading. Of course if you like the faded jeans look and you don't want to shell out the big bucks for jeans that are already faded then by all means wash them in the hottest water possible and don't turn them inside them out. When it comes to preserving the life and color of your jeans you may want to forego using the dryer. Hang them up to dry. Air drying is usually easier on our clothes and can help prevent static cling.
Sweaters can mostly be washed. Check the label. I usually wash "dry clean only" clothing on the gentle cycle in cold water. Never put your sweaters in the dryer. As this will ensure shrinkage. Lay them flat on a towel to avoid stretching.
These next few tips may sound a bit strange but for whatever reason they do work. Pour a can coke in your load of whites to brighten them. Contrary to what you may think it will not discolor or stain your whites. If you have hard water stains in your washing machine run an empty load with the Tang drink mix. The acid from the Tang will remove the hard water stains. This can also work in your dishwasher.
Another tip I would offer is to use only half the amount of soap you normally use and what the box calls for. I never use a full scoop of detergent. This makes your soap go further and it is plenty of soap to clean your clothes.
To remove lint from clothes when you don't have a lint brush handy is to use tape. Masking tape and duct tape work really well. Great to carry on the go too.
Another tip I would suggest is to not overstuff your washing machine. It is tempting sometimes especially if we only have a few extra pieces to throw in. Overstuffing the washing machine will prevent the clothes from circulating inside like they should to come clean. It could also take twice as long to dry them.
