Who hasn't fumbled through their closet looking for a certain item, only to find it later in the dirty clothes basket? Laundry is certainly a job which can never be completed. When it has finally been washed, dried, folded, and put away, it is soon dirty again and the cycle must be repeated. All of the sorting, stain treating, and carrying laundry baskets certainly takes an incomprehensible amount of time out of the day.
It seems as if there is really no end to it, so what's a person to do? Unless you want to start taking your laundry to the cleaner's, the only solution is to try to make the chore a bit more bearable. Sorting clothes at the beginning of your laundry routine is most likely the best time to do it. Look on the tags of your clothes and sort according to temperature setting. Typically, I break down my laundry loads into these piles first: whites, brights, darks, and gentle cycle items. Then they are further divided into hot, warm, and cool.
When your load of laundry is ready to go into the dryer, remember to look at the label on your clothes to determine the proper heat setting. Also, it is a good idea to throw a dryer sheet in with the clothes. I have found that these really help with static cling, and also make the clothes smell nice. Be sure to pull the clothes out and fold them as soon as they are dry. I have found that letting laundry sit in the dryer for too long causes it to wrinkle, making more work.
I have found that by simply pulling the clothes out of the dryer and hanging them up immediately, I can avoid the most dreaded task of all: ironing. If your clothes need ironing, I suggest following your clothing label's recommended heat setting for your iron. Also, for a crisp, professional looking finish, try some laundry starch- available in the same isle where you find your laundry detergent. Follow the directions on the can, and you should have no problems.
While laundry is (in my opinion) the worst household chore of all, it is, unfortunately, a necessary task. Hopefully my tips will help you when you face this dreaded chore. Remember that once you are able to establish a routine, this chore should become a bit more bearable. And once that laundry is done, you will be able to open your closet and find just what you are looking for!
