Laura Bush on Oprah. Class Meets Wanna-be

Spoken from the Heart by Laura Bush

Sherry Tomfeld
I broke my rule of rules and turned Oprah on today. Why? Because I saw an advertisement that said Oprah would be interviewing the former First Lady today. I tuned in and I was in smiles and tears the whole time. Laura Bush for some reason has that effect on me.

Topics from former President George Bush's drinking to how the girls handled bad press about their dad were discussed. Laura Bush has written a book "Spoken from the Heart" and this was her first interview. I wish that Oprah could have spared us all the hollytwit type of interview and was hoping that she would get to some topics like their (the Bushs ) possible poisoning at a G8 Summit, Laura Bush's thoughts on Pelosi and Reids comments about her husband. Things like "incompetent leader" and "loser and liar". These are all discussed in her new book.

When Oprah asked about George Bush drinking too much, Laura Bush said that he had stopped cold turkey. Oprah acted a bit stunned that he could do that. Yes, Oprah, unfortunately there are more of us out here like George Bush than you know. Yes, a hard drinker can stop without outside help or advice from the Oprah show.

Another amazing moment for Oprah seemed to come when she asked Mrs. Bush about 9/11. Mrs. Bush said something referring to being scared. Oprah got a shocked look and said that she had never thought about people in the White House being scared on 9/11!?!? Oprah, do you feel silly yet?

The Bush daughters, Jenna and Barbara, were on for a couple of segments with their mom. Such lovely girls. Jenna is still the bubbly and humorous one and Barbara is the spitting image in looks and in actions of her mother Laura. Jenna made it a point to say that people who have talked about her dad in such negative ways ( heads up Oprah) don't know him. IF they knew him at all, they wouldn't be able to say the things that they have said about them. I wanted so much for Oprah to come clean and say, ya know, I think I was wrong about your dad, but no such luck. The girls, like George and Laura, are class acts.

Class is not something that one can just pick up at the 5 & 10. Class is not about money. Class is a way of thinking and conducting yourself. The Bush family has it. Oprah is not in that league. She has all the money in the world, but she cannot buy class. And this fact showed up today.

Ending her show, the last segment was about Oprah, Target and reading. Why would you end the show with that instead of being gracious (and classy) with the Bush family still sitting there? It's no wonder that Laura Bush spent most of her time focusing her answers to the crowd instead of Oprah.

I tuned Oprah in for Laura Bush. I can't think of too many people that I would endure the classless Oprah for..but Laura Bush was sure worth it.

Enjoyed this! Yes, Laura was a true class act - too bad Oprah doesn't hide her dislike of the Bushes (or any conservative) as well. I also thought GWB was pure class during his recent Oprah appearance.

Patricia the Bushs are quite up front about his drinking and how he quit. Maybe you have families confused?

I'm not a fan of Oprah, but I think she's a great actress. Her performance in The Color Purple was very good. Thanks, Sherry!

I'm with you on this one, Sherry and that is one book I want to buy. And yes it is possible to support some great causes and still not be classy, and some terrible ones (like the church of Oprah) and that movie of the girl zombie and not know the difference.
