Laura Garza Missing and Possibly Murdered After Leaving Club Marquee in NYC

Laura Garza, age 25 of Bay Ridge Brooklyn, is missing and an NYPD spokesperson stated "We suspect foul play and are concerned for her safety." The New York Post reports that Ms. Garza was last seen leaving the 10th Avenue Chelsea club named Club Marquee with two men. One of them may be a convicted sex offender. Garza moved to NYC this year from Texas. She is originally from Mexico.

Ms. Garza appeared to have an enjoyable evening at the club and there is a video of her leaving the club with someone she was interacting with and another man. The NYPD states that in the video she did not look intoxicated and seems to have left willingly with the men. Luckily, more clubs are videotaping the premises in case anything unusual happens and the police need to investigate.

The NY Post states that police have been questioning one of the men and have gone to his home in Wallkill, NY. The NYPD stated that in the sex offender's home a piece of carpet was cut out of a rug and blood stains were found in the home. Police are seeking a search warrant for the home.

Did Ms. Garza know the men she left the club with? This remains to be determined. Witnesses at the club were able to identify the men interacting with Ms. Garza in the video and said they were "regulars" at the club.

Perhaps Ms. Garza's disappearance is yet another reminder that club life may be dangerous and it is best to never leave a club with someone you just met there. At the least, always let a friend know if you have met someone and are accompanying them somewhere. Another tip is to leave a message to yourself on your home phone if you are embarking on some unexpected "adventure." Detail any information about where you are going and with whom. However; it is always safest to just depart for home with the friends you arrived with when the hour grows late.

Ms. Garza's family and friends must be deeply concerned about her safety. Don't put your family in this unfortunate situation. Be safe and only go to clubs with friends and do not ever allow someone you just met there to escort you out of the club alone. Too many young women have gone missing that way, when a split second decision causes them to lose their life.

This does not sound like a story with a happy ending.

Violence against women should be classified as a hate crime and condemned as such worldwide. Until then, women will continue to be victims of a type of homegrown terrorism that no one should have to face.

my grandmother taught me that clubs were dangerous places, and I have actually been to very few in my lifetime.
