The Lauren Alaina song "Like My Mother Does" has hit written all over it. On the 2011 American Idol finale, Alaina belted out two strong songs and then nailed her new release pending victory. Alaina, who was apparently battling voice problems, didn't appear to have any signs of weakness as she slam dunked "Maybe It Was Memphis" during her second performance of the night.
Fellow contestant Scotty McCreery was also impressive-but it seemed the male judges were anxious to declare Alaina the winner of the 2011 American Idol finale. McCreery, who sang "Gone" and "Check Yes or No", ended his night with his potential new release called "I Love You This Big." While the performance was enjoyed by judges, it seemed to pale in comparison to the ballad Alaina sang. In fact, the Lauren Alaina song could be one of the best performed new songs in American Idol history.
Fans have seen artists successfully sing other artists songs quite well over the years. But in my opinion, the Lauren Alaina song "Like My Mother Does" is the biggest potential hit the show will have ever helped produce. It's just that good.
Alaina has country star written all over her. The 16 year old has incredible poise and performs well past her age with the amount of vocal polish only country music veterans usually provide.
McCreery, who could win the 2011 American Idol finale thanks to huge fan support, seemed to whisper in the ear of Alaina at the end of the show. It seemed as if McCreery was telling Alaina she had won the competition with the incredible performance of "Like My Mother Does." Alaina acted surprised and turned to Scotty and shook her head. It has to make American Idol fans wonder if McCreery, being the gentleman he is, almost told her she would be the next champ.
The only problem with McCreery and Alaina performing hand picked new songs is that not every song is created equal. I picked Alaina to win the overall competition several months ago but I hate to see Scotty not get to attempt a tear jerker like Alaina was offered. In the past, male singers have performed the same song if I remember right. It definitely wouldn't be the best idea to have the girl and guy do the same song-considering songs are usually written for a guy or a girl in particular. But I just didn't think the Scotty McCreery new song "I Love You This Big" had the immediate hit potential that the new Lauren Alaina song "Like My Mother Does" has. The Alaina ballad is a no doubt number one tune. It has that much potential if she wins the overall title. Don't be surprised if she does release it regardless of the final outcome of the 2011 American Idol competition. Don't be surprised if the Scotty McCreery song also gets released. My guess is that if both were released at the same time-the Alaina song would be number one within 2-3 weeks while the McCreery song would stop somewhere in the Top 20. My guess is American Idol fans are already hopping on the internet to get one more listen to "Like My Mother Does." I could be wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me if that song is the top downloaded tune in American Idol history before all is said and done. And it probably propelled Alaina to the top.
"Like My Mother Does" could be an anthem for many young women for the next few decades. It could be played at weddings for the next century.
It will be interesting to see how America votes following the 2011 American Idol finale. Sometimes the talk of the judges has an opposite affect-or so it seems on voting. In this case, the judges thought Alaina was a winner. Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler picked Alaina while Jennifer Lopez took a split decision. So who wins? I think it's Lauren Alaina in a landslide but I truly believe Scotty McCreery has the sneaky potential for an upset. I think it's obvious the best singer left in the competition is Alaina--but Scotty has a deep voice that you just can't teach. I also think both are destined for huge things in country music in the near future.
