Lavender for Insomnia

Tameko Barnette
Every once in awhile, I have serious issues with getting to sleep in a timely manner, especially when I have an important appointment or something urgent going on in my personal life and sleep doesn't want to visit me at all.

For several years, when those few sleepless nights came along each year, I would take an over-the-counter sleep aid, which took a long time to get into my system and work. Plus, when I'd wake up I felt slightly drowsy and a bit tired throughout the day, even though I got my required six to eight hours of sleep.

At the time, I wasn't sure where to even look for an alternative for sleep until a co-worker gave me some lavender flowers to have at my desk. She told me they were great for relaxation and stress. Before she could even get the flowers into my hand, I immediately smelled the beautiful fragrance rising from the delicate purple petals. And to be quite honest, I instantaneously felt relaxed.

But what I eventually found out is that lavender is superb for insomnia as it has a relaxing effect on the mind. Lavender (lavendula angustifolia) is cultivated in fields in parts of France and Italy.

In a recent six-week study with elderly patients at a nursing home it was discovered that lavender oil helped with those who were having problems with insomnia.

Research showed that lavender oil worked just as well as prescription sleeping pills. Other scientists discovered that lavender oil has a soothing effect on the human psyche, which promotes relaxation, less stress, and induces sleep.

As for me, I noticed the effects right away. One evening, I put several drops of lavender oil in my bathwater. I soaked for about 15-20 minutes. I fell asleep in the bathtub. The sleepiness did not wear off after getting out and going to bed. I was able to drift right off to sleep. When I woke up the next morning I was very well rested. I didn't feel drowsy or sluggish all day as I did with the over-the-counter sleep aids I had tried before. I was pleasantly surprised.

Methods of Use

5-6 drops of lavender oil in bathwater.

Several drops in a spray bottle of spring water. Spray in room prior to nap time or bed time.

Steam - 2 to 3 drops in boiling hot water, put a towel over the head, and inhale the steam for a few minutes.

Sweet dreams!
