Law & Order started out with crimes being solved. First they would track down the criminals and then they would take them to court. It was unique in that it would put the whole catch the criminal and try the criminal aspects of the story together in 1 hour. This was not being done in TV shows. Usually it was either a show about catching criminals or it was a show about trying criminals.
The stories were interesting and I really enjoyed the first few years. Then politics took Law & Order over and the result was horrendous. Christians, right wingers, anti-abortion, pro-gun and open immigration were just a few of the story lines that rubbed more than this writer wrong. The one that really sent me over the edge was about Anchor Babies. Messing with one of my favorite shows by pushing political and social agendas took Law & Order off of my favorites list and onto my "when will this get canceled" list. I've never read anywhere that the powers that be at NBC "knew" that they were ruining Law & Order ratings with their version of "how to make a conservative or Christian turn the channel". But looking back, it must have been clear how many viewers fell away from them.
Law & Order had 2 spin-offs. Law & Order: SUV and Law & Order : Criminal Intent that are still in production. The writers of these 2 shows seem to be able to put a damper on the agendas and have been able to keep their viewers coming back. But who knows? Maybe Law & Order's time has come and gone.
I loved a lot of the actors on Law & Order. My favorites were Jerry Orbach and Dennis Farina. Orbach had such good timing with his comedic licks and I just plainly loved to stare at Dennis Farina. What an attractive and spiffy man!
Hopefully Law & Order reruns will continue (I'm talking the early years). I will watch them and like them. But I am glad Law & Order has been canceled. Here's hoping there isn't an 11th hour reprieve!

Post a CommentWow! Nice reporting on this. I don't have cable and live in the hills so don't watch TV, but I thought shows tried to draw in viewers, not alienate them! Nice job.
I haven't watched new Law and Order episodes for years, for just this reason. I too, love the old reruns, though. Great article. Thanks.
Great article. I agree with you. L&O was my favorite until they got so political. When Fred Thompson was the DA he made conservative points once in a while. I no longer make it a point to watch L&O now. Sometimes I watch a rerun. I especially liked Jerry Orbach. I very seldom watch any network shows as they are so political. If I want politics I watch news and talk shows. I like to be entertained when I am watching comedy or drama.
Like you..I WAS a huge fan ;-)
I have to agree with you. We really liked Criminal Intent, but SVU and the regular one just have too much agenda, too little plot. Now CI isn't even on a regular network, and we can't get it.
Go down the road, turn left, then left, turn left again, keep turning left and you begin to sound like the show was co-written by Michael Moore and Cesar Chavez.
They should have never messed with sucess. They only have their selves to blame. Great points and article Sherry.
I've only watched the show a few times - sounds like I didn't miss much!
I stopped watching when every episode had a political agenda. I'm glad it's gone.
