Lawn Mowing Tips and Tricks

A home's lawn can make a great impact on the appearance of a property. A well manicured grass lawn speaks volumes of the homeowners and their concern for their space in the world. If you are in charge of mowing the grass and maintaining the lawn, follow a few of these tips this spring and summer for a beautiful lawn.

1. Choose the ideal lawnmower. Consider a reel lawnmower if the area of the lawn is less than 500 square feet. Purchase a power lawnmower for larger lawns and a riding mower if your lawn is an acre or larger.

Popular lawnmower brands are John Deere, Honda, EverRide, Craftsman and Snapper.

2. Make a mowing schedule. Depending on how fast your grass grows, you'll want to stick to a tight schedule on keeping it cut. Regularly mowing the lawn can make it appear fuller.

3. Keep the lawn cut to about 2.5 inches in the summer and a little shorter in the spring and fall.

4. Mow the grass during the evening. Sun can put too much strain on a lawn.

5. Do not mow a lawn when it is wet. A lawn is more vulnerable to disease when mowed wet.

6. Keep your lawnmower in good working order. Sharpen your lawnmower blades once every month or two. It will produce a clean cut which in turn leads to healthier grass.

7. Leave grass clippings on the lawn as they provide nutrients. Consider purchasing a mulching lawn mower.

8. Mow the lawn in a back and forth pattern while overlapping the row you've already mowed.

9. Observe your lawn throughout the spring and summer. By regularly looking over your lawn, you can keep an eye out for problem areas such as weeds.

10. Mow your lawn through the fall until it stops growing for the season.
