Lay's Tangy Carolina BBQ Potato Chip Review

I haven't enjoyed a BBQ potato chip in years. I like the old flavor of BBQ potato chip before the chip makers decided to make these chips sweet. A little tang, a little spice and yes maybe even some zip in my chip, but not sweet. Much to my delight I discovered that Frito-Lay was offering a new chip. "Tangy Carolina BBQ" is the name of this discovery. I grabbed the bag off the shelf of my local grocery store and headed for a home.

Upon arriving home, I poured myself a glass of soda, put a movie in the DVD drive and grabbed my bag of Lay's "Tangy Carolina BBQ" chips. Then I became depressed, this was not my idea of a tangy BBQ, this tasted like vinegar with some chili pepper and a slight smoke flavor.

Before, I went crazy and determined this chip to be awful and ask who on earth thought that a BBQ involved that much vinegar, I did some research on Carolina BBQ sauce recipes.

Frito-Lay got it right. Carolina BBQ sauce has vinegar as its most dominant ingredient in several recipes I have found. For my taste in BBQ flavored potato chips this is not a first choice but it probably will be for many.

The dominant flavor in the Lay's "Tangy Carolina BBQ" chip is vinegar, right behind that is a hint of chili pepper, slight smoke flavor and then some flavor that is similar to some kind of tomato base. If you like vinegar potato chips, then you will probably like this potato chip.

If you are looking for a traditional BBQ chip, then Lay's "Tangy Carolina BBQ" chip is probably not for you. You might want to keep looking for something to suit your taste. As for me, I am still waiting for a Midwest Tangy BBQ chip to come out, with less smoke flavor and more spices.

It's hard for me to rate this chip as it's not a flavor or BBQ that I am familiar with, so I suggest you try Lay's "Tangy Carolina BBQ" chip and decide for yourself. The flavor isn't bad; it's just different and may be one that many of us find will become an acquired taste.
