Lazy Ways to Save Money

Loki Morgan
Buy water in bulk.

I can buy a 24 pack of 16.9 ounce water bottles for $3.99, or I can buy a 1 gallon jug of water for $.99. Although the store's cheat sheet shows both options as being $.01 / ounce, when you do the math yourself you can see there is a difference.

The bottles of water will cost you $.00983728 / ounce whereas the jug of water costs less at $.00773438 / ounce. Does less than one cent per ounce really make a difference? Let's do the math!

Assuming you drink the recommended eight cups of water a day you will drink 64 ounces a day, or 448 ounces of water a week. If that water comes from bottles you will be spending $4.41 a week verses $3.47 if you are drinking from jugs.

Savings of $.94 a week might not seem much but keep in mind this is for one person. A family of four that buys jugs of water instead of bottles will save $195.96 a year. This is money saved without spending time cutting coupons or shopping around for better deals.

Buying water in jugs has the added benefit of avoiding the frustration of finding a partially filled water bottle that no one will claim as theirs.

Ditch cable and stream Netflix.

I save over $600 a year by not having cable television. Streaming Netflix allows me to watch television shows and movies on demand for a fraction of the price. I am able to get my news fix on the Internet from Yahoo! News and the Wii News Channel. I may not be up to date on the latest shows but the savings is well worth it.

Eat frozen pizza.

Keep your pizza night and save money by substituting frozen pizza for delivery. Once a month instead of ordering a large thin crust cheese pizza to be delivered to my house for $20 including tip, I pick out a fancy $6 frozen pizza. The pizza is just as good and I save $168 dollars a year.

Skip the booze when you go out to dinner.

Enjoy your dinner with non-alcoholic drinks to save money on your check. You can save even more by drinking water since it is usually free.

Turn off the lights!

One of the easiest way you can save money is by cutting down on your electricity use. Turn off the lights and open your blinds during the day. Remember small actions add up!

Great tips! My grandmother used to call it "burning daylight" when the lights were on during the day - and unnecessarily.

Last month's electric bill was my lowest ever...I've switched to CFL and LED bulbs, have dimmer switches, and never leave lights on that I don't need.

I'm so lazy that I don't go out (friends say I should crank up my car at least once a week) - amazing how much I save that way.
