Lead Content Prompts Candy Recall by Candy Dynamics

How Much Lead is Too Much Lead when it Comes to Food?

Pat Anthony
Candy Dynamics has recalled Toxic Waste® brand candy due to lead content. The FDA announced the information on the government site following the company press release. This is a candy imported from Pakistan.

Some consumers questioned why the Toxic Waste® candy is being imported and why parents would buy it. However, while some thought the name of the candy was offensive, they commented how kids would find this amusing.

Although only the cherry flavored Toxic Waste® brand Nuclear Sludge® Chew Bars tested for lead above the tolerated limit, all bars offered by Candy Dynamics of Indianapolis, Indiana will be recalled.

The recalled candy will include 0.7 ounce packages labeled as Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Chew Bars, with a the UPC code 0 89894 81430 6; Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Sour Apple Chew Bars with the UPC code 0 10684 81410 7; Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Blue Raspberry Chew Bars with the UPC code 0 89894 81420 7. The recalled candy is as shown in the photo included with this article.

The amount of lead allowed in such products by the US FDA is 0.1 ppm, and the California Department of Public Health is reported to have found one lot, #8288A, contained 0.24 parts per million. Many consumers are not aware that lead is allowed in food offered for sale, whether imported or domestic.

No illnesses have been reported connected to Toxic Waste® products. Consumers with the product may return the candy to the place of purchase for a refund.

When I was aware of this recall, I questioned who would buy such a thing. Thank you for this "nice" way of announcing this recall.
