Leaf Dance

Wayne Howard

The wind dances among the leaves,
While the ancient maple sighs before its winter sleep.
The leaves are dressed for the Autumnal ball
In gaudy gold and red, some with still a touch of green.

They quiver at the dancer's urging touch
And join the dancing wind,
Twisting, turning in graceful pirouettes,
Seeking the ground but buoyed up by the breeze.

A boy below has joined the dance.
He leaps and whirls and spins,
Twisting, turning in graceful pirouettes,
He offers up his hand to grasp the dancing leaves.

They flirt and feint and dance about,
Twisting, turning in graceful pirouettes
Until at last a leaf is clasped and ends that dance,
Then the boy and laughing wind and leaves begin the dance anew.
