Leafy Hope
(I Wrote This One Many Years Ago, After Surveying This Scene. The Beauty and Meaning Has Lingered with Me for so Long.)
not in the Bible alone,
but also on trees,
and in the flowers
and clouds and stars."
Martin Luther
(1483 - 1546)
The breeze sang a postlude.
The trees bowed in reverence
To the Resurrection Day.
As I stepped from the church,
The rain began.
Drops splashed and bounced,
Washing dust from the parking lot,
Filled once a year.
On the way home,
The road curved into the valley,
Through a grove of smaller trees,
Bending, bowing,
Trying to stand.
Each tiny trunk
Bore a plaque:
"In Memoriam."
The leafy nursery,
Springing to life,
Revived a memory of those
Who passed into eternity
All too soon.
The Gardener knows.
He saw the crash
And caught each life
In His own hands.
Resurrection, rising from the dead.
Leaving behind, a tree.
Because of His own tree,
Life remains.
In time, a tree can reach the sky
Or bow to a memory,
Or bend with a song in the wind
Or bear new fruit.
A life begins,
Hope for green growth,
And new life.
