Learn to Appreciate the Journey to Reaching Your Goals

Cheryl Williams

It is easy to become so obsessed with reaching a goal that you forget to appreciate the moments along the way. It isn't easy to reach a prize goal. Whether you are looking to lose weight, become financially secure, overcome an addiction, finish your education, or find a better job -- there is a lot of hard work, persistence, and tears along the way.

How often have you grumbled and complained about those stepping stones along the way? Sometimes those stones are more like boulders, seemingly insurmountable. Still, you manage to climb them and reach the other side. Do you take the time to truly appreciate those moments, or do you just let the moment go by without a thought?

It is important to take time to reflect on those moments along the way to reaching your goal. Perhaps you fall down a lot along the way. That's okay. Pick yourself and learn from the experience. Each moment is a learning experience, making you stronger and wiser. Take the time to realize each small accomplishment along the way. Be proud of what you are doing.

Chelsea had always had the desire to write a novel. Despite telling herself she would never be able to accomplish something like that, the nagging desire would not go away. When she moved to Charlotte, she joined the Charlotte Writer's Club and formed some connections within the writing community. This further inspired her, and she began to realize that she could actually see her desire come to fruition. One day she sat down and started to write. The words poured from her, and over the course of two years, her novel was born. Each time she finished a chapter, she would celebrate its completion. When the novel was complete, Chelsea felt a huge sense of accomplishment. In asking her, however, what she had learned from the process, her response was, "I learned to appreciate the joy in the actual writing of the novel rather its completion." She went on to describe all that she had learned along the way. Not only had she learned a lot about herself, she learned a lot about the characters that she had developed. She came to know them in a very personal way. What she learned along the way was priceless in helping her actually complete her novel.

If you are trying to reach a particular goal in your life, take the time to focus on those moments along the way. Don't let your impatience to see the end result prevent you from seeing the beauty of the journey itself.
