Learn Ballroom in Oklahoma City

I was frankly amazed to find that so many people evidently love to dance in Oklahoma. There are dance instructors and studios all over the state, but particularly in Oklahoma City. I knew there was always a love of country-western dance here but had no idea of how many ballroom instructors there are to choose from. Also amazing was the level of expertise I found. And the ballroom classes have branched out into lots of Latin and salsa styles that once were not taught as part of ballroom repertoire. Now, they are. Many of the clubs and studios teach at all levels and even train dancers for serious competition.

Dance Makers if one of the best known and most respected of all the ballroom dance instruction studios in Oklahoma. They teach all levels, from beginner to very advanced, and they even train for competitive dancing. The thing they have that some other studios don't, is a specialty of teaching that great swing dancing that was done in the 1940s. But they also teach country-western, Latin styles and all the classic ballroom styles like waltz, two-step and fox-trot. Another nice thing is their prices. For just $49 students get three classes, one fun-group class and a practice party. Harpes, Dance, Inc. bills itself as the only "non-contract" dance studio in the area. And their fees really do sound great. Lee Harpe, the founder of this studio in 1992, runs it today. He began as a professional in country-western dancing, but then he veered off into ballroom and Latin. Now he teaches everything and has a highly professional staff of teachers to back him up. Classes are $50 in advance for 8 classes, or $10 per class. He also has a $645 private lesson class for a block of 15 hours. Their stress is on fun here, and they welcome all beginners. Every year, they go on a cruise together, so that's another incentive to meet some folks here and learn from pros too.

The Oklahoma City Swing Club has several purposes: to preserve and teach the great dance called "swing," and to focus on training people to dance for enjoyment and fun. Their calendar is up for April, but those wanting lessons this summer will have to call them. All lessons begin the first week of each month and ballroom and swing lessons take place on Tuesday's and Thursdays. Prices for group lessons are $7 per class for members and $10 for non-members. It only costs $15 for club membership, however, so there'd be a considerable savings to those who will want to take a lot of lessons as they advance in skill. Dance instruction begins at 6:30 and then from 8-10 they have a social dance. The Swing Dance Club has parties all year long, and singles are welcome. This sounds like something to join even if you take classes somewhere else.
