Bird watching hobbyists will love these opportunities to learn more about their craft at these inexpensive classes in Jackson, Michigan. A series of workshops help individuals watch birds in their backyard or in their world travels. This article summarizes the classes available to the general public. All are located at the Dahlem Center in Jackson, Michigan.

Birding 101 will be led by Gary Siegrist, and teaches secrets on how to become a better bird watcher. This is a three-part workshop held on April 21 (7-9 p.m.), April 28 (7-9 p.m.), and May 1. The first two sessions are in the classroom studying topics such as using binoculars and field guides, identifying birds, bird behavior, habitat, and how to find them. The third session is a weekend field trip to a popular birding site. Advanced registration is required for this course. Costs are $25 / $40 for individual or family members, or $35 / $55 for individual or family non-members. Call 517-782-3453 to reserve your spot in the course.

As a follow-up course, Birding 201 continues in the same fashion. The course is geared toward graduates of Birding 101 or advanced bird watcher hobbyists. The dates for Birding 201 are May 16, May 26, and May 29. The activities of the first two sessions include a 6:00 p.m. bird walk and a class from 7-9 p.m. On May 29, participants will enjoy a weekend field trip to a popular birding site. The prices are the same as for Birding 101 and advanced registration is required.

Between the two courses, birding hobbyists may also participate in the Dahlem Center's "Big Sit" activity. This bird counting competition occurs on May 11 from 6 a.m. to noon. Whoever shows up will be divided into groups and will compete to identify the most bird species by both sound and sight. Prizes will be awarded as well. Call 517-782-3453 for more information.

Bird watching is great! We have an annual international bird race here in Malaysia up at Fraser's Hill and I got to observe these pro birdwatchers watching the birds - equally as fun!

I love birdwatching! And in Florida, birds abound. We visit an eagle's nest on our walks. It's so awesome. Very nice write-up.
