I am not an expert chef. In college, I survived on Ramen noodles, pizza and an occasional grilled chicken breast. In my mid-twenties, I learned about Truffles and Trifles from some colleagues and friends.

Truffles and Trifles, located at 711 W. Smith St. in College Park, is a cooking school that turns traditional lessons into a fun social event. A typical class can hold up to about 25 people. Couples, singles, families, coworkers and children are invited.

When registering, you pick the course that appeals to you, whether it's a lesson in summer grilling or a course in decadent desserts. There is something for everyone, from perfect tailgating recipes for football parties to fabulous Italian to a course in cake decorating.

Classes are split into groups, and each group is given three to four recipes to work on for the evening. Most courses feature an appetizer or two, multiple side dishes, several entrees and a dessert or two.

The course I attended with my father was in summer grilling. Our group made a grilled shrimp salad with fruit and veggies and grilled corn-on-the-cob. Other groups made Tuscan grilled cheese sandwiches, grilled beef tenderloin with mushroom gravy, grilled chicken with salsa and more. One group made fresh vanilla ice cream with grilled peaches for dessert.

The good news is that there is so much food, everyone can try a little bit of everything. Then, students are given a packet of recipes to take home and try on their own.

Course instructor and founder Marc Arthur is a skilled educator and cook, coming up with new and unique recipes every week. She is constantly available during class to show you the best way to prepare your dish. She taught me the best way to zest a lemon and dice celery.

Truffles and Trifles also hosts specialty events, like "Date Night" for couples, as well as team-building events for friends and coworkers. You may also book special parties, or sign up your children for summer cooking camp. For parents looking for a unique experience with a child, Truffles and Trifles hosts a Parent/Child Course only three times a year. The next one is scheduled for September 29.

Don't forget to check out the gourmet shop filled with various culinary delights.

Truffles and Trifles turns an everyday task like making dinner into a truly unique social event for everyone.
