Houston is a great city for festivals and fun. There are all sorts of nightclubs and venues for dancing and celebrating with music and cocktails. But who feels like going out and being in a dance crowd if they really feel awkward dancing? The ones who look like they're having the most fun are the people who get out on the dance floor and really swing! It's like anything else--the better your are at something, the more you will probably enjoy it. Fortunately, there are many ways to learn the art of dance--all types of dance. I researched many of these and found some interesting web sites that give information on local instructors and schools.

There's an on site inquiry at Dance Passion where folks can ask questions about the instruction at this company. There are also detailed instructions on how to get to the building where they teach. Students can take either group or private classes in Salsa, Latin, Ballroom, Swing, Country-Western and even hip-hop and more. Students pay for 4 lessons months at either the beginner, intermediate or advanced levels. Each class session is just under an hour and costs $40. Their Salsa group also gets together to dance at local Salsa Clubs. It's fun and a great way to meet and make new friends. There's an introductory special now that offers 1/2 hour of private instruction, which would ordinarily cost $65 for a 50-minute session.

The Rogelio Rodriguez Academy of Dance has been in operation probably longer than any school of its type--since 1966. The 61-year-old teacher has been instructing classes and students in traditional Mexican dance styles, Salsa, Flamenco, hip-hop. They have a school of Ballet starting students as young as three and four years of age. They have had students dancing with major companies around the U.S. and participating in festivals and with local companies. They accept students at all levels of learning. They have a registration fee of $25. Classes start at $60 per month for one class each week and go up for more weekly classes per month.

I love the concept behind this company. Beginners Only concentrates on people who may feel awkward taking dance lessons with those who are more coordinated and quicker. Beginners Only is solely focused on training beginners, so it would be a great place to learn with nothing but others like yourself. They teach just the basics of traditional Latin dances, Salsa, Two-step, Swing, Fox-trot, Waltz, and many other social style dances. The purpose is to have the most fun. They have a great package for people getting married. For $400 they will give lessons using your Reception music for that important evening's dance celebration. This is $400 and will allow unlimited dance lessons for up to two months before the wedding day. What a bargain!

I have also included a link outside this article which may be very useful for people who want to concentrate on learning just one or two particular styles and to find people or companies that teach it. I was just amazed at how many dance teachers there really are in the metro Houston ares. The site is learntodance.com.
