First start with a circle, or a round oval, this is the beginning of the flower. Draw a circle near the upper center of the page. Then carefully draw the petals. They are sort of shaped like triangles around the circle. You might want to curve them a little so they look more life like. In real life they are more like a long thin pointed petal but for a cartoon, a curved triangle works ok.
Then draw hatching or parallel lines that cross over each other in the center for a little bit. Not too much unless you want to cover the whole inside of the flower with hatching. See picture for a better idea. Inside the center of the flower is where all the seeds are held, so you could make the hatching almost the angle of making diamond shapes. Like a skewed number sign. Only more lines.
Then at the bottom draw a long thin stem from two curved parallel lines that start out narrower at the top. And then add some leaves. Sunflower leaves are sort of big and almost like pointy ovals with a stem. Make them sort of the shape of an egg with a curved point. There you drew a sunflower.
Now if you like you can color it in, you can use watercolor or oil or acrylic or even guache. Or you could use marker or even color pencil. The point is, once you learn to draw a shape, you can then embellish it with color. Or you can draw it and let a child color it in as an art project.
You can even use it as a pattern to make metal jewelry, or a stencil or even a quilt appliqué. The point is, once you learn to draw, you can do many great arts and crafts but you need to start with the basics. Maybe you'll start drawing realistic and develop a love for abstract like so many artists. But you need to start with the basics.
