Learn Hip Hop Dance on the Internet

Shelly Stone
If you are interested in learning how to do some of the latest hip hop dance moves the internet is a great alternative to taking dance classes. You many not have access to dance classes in your town, or you may not have the budget for it. Whatever your reason, using online videos and dance websites to help you learn is easy and fun.

There a few websites that offer dance instructional videos online. Some, such as www.hip-hop-dance.net, have free samples available. The videos will usually teach you one or two short dance moves, broken down slowly so you can follow along. They are a great way to see and try the style before buying, as most of the websites also offer dvds and clips for sale. Hip hop is a very broad dance term and encompasses many unique styles. Each dance website has their own take on hip hop dance and may teach a slightly different style. Some styles are considered funk, or street style dance, and others consider break dancing to be hip hop. Try to watch a few videos first before purchasing so that you understand the exact style of dance they will be teaching. Other dance websites that offer free previews and online dance instructional videos include:

If you have some dance experience or are blessed with the ability to learn dance simply by watching others dance, then the internet has endless possibilities for you. A search on google or youtube will return thousands of results for hip hop dance. You can watch the videos and try to imitate the steps. The nice thing about streaming video is that you can pause, rewind and re-play the videos as many times as you need to learn the steps. There are also some ambitious dancers that upload free instructional videos on video sharing sites, though some are better teachers/dancers than others. When learning steps from online videos, you should always be mindful of copyright issues - don't perform the choreography without permission.

The down side of using the internet to learn hip hop dance is that you won't have anyone to correct your mistakes or explain things in different ways if you are having difficulty picking the steps up. Sometimes using a mirror, taping yourself or asking a friend to watch you can help. Even better is actually learning with a friend who can help you with feedback and support.

So the next time you're thinking about trying out a new dance style, take some time to surf the internet and see if you can't find some online dance videos to inspire you!

www.bustamove.com (a small library of videos), www.learntodance.com (currently there are only 4 free hip hop video clips), www.urban-dance-videos.com (offers free samples taken directly from their vhs/dvds for sale), and www.idance.net (they have a few free preview videos but are mostly videos you can pay to download).
