Hypnosis is a trance-like state of mind. If you have ever been reading a book and gotten so into it that you hardly even noticed anything going on around you, you have experienced the trance-like state that is very similar to hypnosis. You do not become unconscious, you become very attentive, extremely relaxed and calm, and you are a lot more open to suggestions. You are less likely to be critical of what you are being told and more likely to believe. The main purpose of hypnosis is to gain control of your own behavior, feelings, and general well-being.
Hypnosis has been used in a variety of ways to help people gain control over them and make changes for the better. It has been used to help people stop smoking, to stop bed-wetting, and even help people stop overeating. Many people have used hypnosis to get over fears. Some women use hypnosis to treat the pain they experience during childbirth rather than using drugs to ease the pain. Hypnosis has been used to help reduce headaches, and even help ease asthma symptoms. It seems as though hypnosis has been widely used to treat medical problems as well as to combat addictions and bad behaviors in general.
Hypnosis is not normally used as a treatment by itself. It is normally used as a part of a treatment plan. Just like with many treatment plans, hypnosis may help one person, but another person may have no benefit at all from it. Hypnosis actually seems to work the best for those people who are very motivated and have a well trained hypno-therapist.
Hypnosis techniques differ. The specific technique used for one person depends a lot on what the person wants to accomplish as well as personal preferences in regards to the technique. Examples of different techniques are listening to a soothing tone of voice that describes relaxing images for you to envision. During this technique, suggestions are made for ways for you to achieve your goals. Another technique used gets you into a relaxed state of mind the same way, but once you are under the hypnosis; your imagination is stimulated with specific images for reaching your goals. During this technique, you can vividly see the goals being achieved. One technique uses suggestions to stimulate your brain, and the other uses suggestive imagery to help you envision the goal being achieved. Another technique is self-hypnosis. To use this technique, you need to be taught how to induce this hypnotic state on your own, then you can continue on to learn how to use the hypnotic state to help yourself.
There are some basic things you can expect from a hypnotic session. A normal session will last from about 30 to 60 minutes. The number of sessions that a person needs to accomplish their goals may range from only one session to many sessions. A person generally brings themselves out of the hypnotic state at the end of the session; the hypno-therapist does not have to bring you out of it. You can normally go right back to your normal daily activities as soon as the session is over.
Many of us have watched hypnotists on stage. These hypnotists use hypnosis for entertainment purposes. Hypnosis used for medical purposes is not done in the same process. These entertainers have raised many questions about hypnosis and also created many myths. Some people think that when you are hypnotized, you lose you free will and will do whatever you are told to do. This is not true, you are more open to suggestion, but you retain your free will; you will not do anything that you choose not to do. Another common misconception is that when you are hypnotized, the hypno-therapist is in control of you. That is untrue. The hypnotist may guide you, but you are the one on control. Some people think that you lose consciousness and have amnesia. A very small number of people do experience amnesia after being hypnotized, but the majority of people remember everything that happened while they were hypnotized. Another very popular misconception is that you can be hypnotized unwillingly. In reality, it takes a willing participant to have a successful hypnotic experience, even then, sometimes, hypnosis does not work.
There are very few risks associated with hypnosis. It is considered to be a safe addition to a treatment plan. Very few people experience headaches, dizziness, or nausea. People should avoid hypnosis that helps to restore lost memories because sometimes, people create memories from their own imaginations and these implanted memories can be very troubling.
Over all, when hypnosis is used as a part of a treatment plan, it can help people gain control of their life through helping them combat addiction, stop bad habits, combat fears, and many other things. If you are interested in hypnosis, you should do your homework and find the hypno-therapist that is right for you.
