What did they mean? They could knit, why not show me a few stitches and how to hold the needles? I could not understand their lack of interests in sharing their skill of kniting. On day, I decided to learn to knit on my own. I took the encylopedia down and looked up KNITTING. I had purchased a set of needles in a varitey of sizes and several colors of knitting yarn. Why could I not teach myself!
As I read the information, I began to understand the hesitation of those skilled knitters. My left-handedness was a challenge for them. I was determined to show them I could create something. Perhaps, my item would not be as classic or dramatic as theirs, but at least it would be a testiment to my desire to learn.
I was unable to grasp the technique of holding the needles as shown in the diagrams. As I looked at the pictures, they were confusing and frustrating. I realized how to simplify the mysteries of knitting. I placed the book in front of a mirror and saw the diagrams of how to hold the needles properly.
Soon, I began simple knitting and created scarves, throws, and even a couple of simple vests. Sure, my creations are far from those who win prizes at a County Fair, or sell for astronomical prices in stores, but my creations are mine, and I have learned to accept the challenge and master a skill on my own.
For those lefties out there who have been told it is impossible to learn how to create or learn a skill, do not accept those words. Take it upon yourself to be determined and learn whatever skill it is that others disclaim.
Good luck to the future lefty knitters in the world.
