Outside Games Are Fun and Healthy

Gather all your friends and relatives together for a fast and furious game of Kick the Can. Adjust the rules for younger players. All you need is an empty can and some excited participants.

We Learned Early that We Didn't Want to Go to Jail.

My mom and dad often played this type of game with my brothers and me. They invited anyone passing our way to join us. It was a great way to meet new people. I remember holding my breath as I hid behind a tree to prohibit becoming captive and when I was it, I never got frustrated when I couldn't catch all the kids. I loved it when one of the players tried to free my captives from jail, because I could usually catch them and put them in jail too.

How to Play Kick the Can

A large yard or a park is the best places to play. Look for an area with good hiding places and a nice place for a jail. Gather together at least four people and an empty can. If you are in a public place, invite some of the passers-bys to join you.

Select one person to be "it". This can be done by some form of agreed upon way, like drawing straws or the short stick. Place the can out in the open on home base. "It" waits while the first person kicks the can as far as they can. "It" chases the can and returns it to the home base while all the other players run and hide before "it" places the can back on the beginning spot.

"It" looks for the hidden players and upon discovery, "it" calls out the name and they both race back to home base and the can. If they don't beat "it" back, they have to go to jail.

Free Your Comrades but Don't Get Caught

During the game players try to free the jailed people by kicking the can and releasing the prisoners. However, the player has to be careful because if caught they will be jailed if "it" beats the other player to the can. The jailing of all players ends the game. When the game starts over, "it" is the first captive from the previous game.

When one person was "it" for too long a time, out of mercy, we would appoint the new "it" to take the first person's place.

Yes indeed, sometimes the simplest games are the most fun. Nicely done. I agree with Brenda. I am a people person and I get the feeling that you are too Cherley.
