Early Detection of Breast Cancer is Essential for Survival

Monthly self breast examinations are essential for the early detection of lumps or irregularities in the breast tissue. Self breast examinations will allow you to become familiar with the the way that your breasts normally feel, so that you will easily become aware of even the smallest of changes. In order for breast self examination to be effective you must first learn the proper technique. New scientific research has prompted the American Cancer Society to update the instructions for self breast examination.

Laying on your back, take your hand and using the tips of your fingers, move your fingers across the breast, in an up and down motion. Using this technique is the most effective way for covering the entire breast. Apply different levels of pressure, in order to feel the different depths of breast tissue. Start with a light touch, to inspect the breast tissue that is the closest to the outer skin. Increase the pressure slightly to feel the breast tissue that lies a little deeper. Finally exert a firm pressure on the breast, to feel the deeper tissue, that is closer to the ribs. Repeat this examination using the fingers of the other hand, on the opposite breast.

While sitting in an upright position, slightly raise your arm and while exerting firm pressure, using your hand feel in the armpit, to check for lumps or irregularities. Repeat this examination with the other armpit. The American Cancer Society states that it is no longer necessary to squeeze the nipple of the breast to check for a discharge of fluid. A discharge is a normal occurrence, with this type of stimulation to the breast nipple. However, if you have a spontaneous discharge of fluid from the breast, this is not a normal occurrence and it should be reported to your doctor, immediately.

Stand facing a mirror, with both hands pressing firmly on your hips. Look at both breasts, inspecting them for any dimpling or changes in size. Check for any redness or swelling of the nipple. Look at the contours of your breast, to check for any irregularities.

Early detection is the best line of defense in the fight against breast cancer. Self breast examination, combined with regular mammograms, performed at your doctor's office are essential to early detection. When breast cancer is detected early, the 5 year survival rate is 98%. There are more than two million breast cancer survivors today, due mainly to early detection.
