Learn How to Save

Linda Bell
As we are in a severe repression, there is no time like the present for making it a habit to save. In fact, saving money and spending less can become as routine for you as brushing your teeth or working out at the gym.

Like forming any other habit, learning to save just requires a bit of practice and discipline over a period of time. Before you know it, you will be practicing tactics to save like it is second nature.

Below are some simple tips to help you form the habit of saving.

Make a commitment to save.

Before you can form the habit, you absolutely have to make a commitment to save. It's far too easy to say you are going to do something without acting on it. That being the case, make the commitment and immediately start saving through various tactics.

List your monthly spending, and label items as must-have or nice-to-have.

Before employing tactics, you need to make some decisions. List your monthly spending in a spreadsheet in buckets such as: phone bill, gasoline, groceries, dining out, sports events, mortgage and salon services.

Be thorough, and estimate how much you spend. Next, label each item as must-have or nice-to-have. Review your list and determine where you can cut spending. For the must-haves, determine how much you would like to lower the estimated spend amount.

Do the same for the nice-to-haves. However, you may want to completely eliminate certain nice-to-have buckets. This, in fact, is the area where you can save the most. Instead of spending $200 a month on weekly manicures and pedicures, consider doing your nails yourself or cutting back to once a month for these services.

Engage in various saving tactics.

Once you determine where you plan to save, it's time to determine the how of it. You can find all kinds of saving tips online. If, for example, you want to spend less on groceries, visit websites such as www.thegrocerygame.com. This site will teach you how to save through using coupons on items that you need.

If you want to cut down on your phone bill, call your service provider and review your services. See if there are new bundled packages that are cheaper and would work.

To save on electricity, use cold water when you wash clothes. Buy large fans for certain rooms, so as to be able to use the air conditioning less in the summer months. Buy high-efficiency light bulbs.

Looking to cut back on your restaurant spending? That's easy. Cook more at home. Order pizza with friends, and you may have just as much fun as dining at a nice restaurant. Be creative.

Make sure you are on target.

Finally, once you determine where you plan to save, and the tactics you will use, track your progress. Fill out that budget, and compare your monthly spend after employing your tactics. Be open to making necessary adjustments, and continue to learn new ways to save.

With the right attitude and a bit of planning, you will find that forming the habit of saving can be quite rewarding. You may be more pleased to find that you did not need all of those things anyway. There is great fulfillment in getting pleasure out of the simple things, and you can often discover that when spending less.
