Meditation is a mind exercise that can help us to keep our minds fit and healthy. But the Western world has only widely known about meditation for the past twenty years. How necessary is meditation to our health? Or is it just some new fad?
Most of us do not have empty hours to waste during our day, so taking up meditation could seem like a waste of valuable time. However, for many, the opportunity to slow down, relax, contemplate, and reflect are invaluable and keep them from going insane from stress. Our inner spirituality and calmness are the tools we have that are best able to combat stress and keep our minds as fit as we keep our bodies. The mind, while wondrously complex, can become overwhelmed with too much information and emotion and should be cared for to keep this from happening.
As our mind operates at various levels, called brainwaves, it raises and lowers its cognition to match the task that is required of it. The harder the task(s), the more brainwaves. As information piles up during the day, this activity can get quite intense. Meditation is a tool that allows us to cope with all this, organizing the information so that the mind can more easily deal with it.
Modern alternative medicine and holistic healers believe in the power of the energy that flows through our mind sand bodies, which they call by various names. Techniques involving breathing, music, aroma therapy, and candles all are used to facilitate meditation, allowing our energy to align itself and our mind to reflect on its day. Do these methods keep us mentally fit?
Yes, these methods can help, but the greatest benefit is the expansion of the mind into higher awareness. Meditation allows for us to become aware that there is more to being alive than just the physical activities we perform. We have endless potential locked away in our minds and meditation can help us unlock those resources and the possibilities they represent.
During a meditative state, thoughts that are normally unheard during the hustle of the day are given the opportunity to come forward. The opportunity to set our own destiny, develop our lives as we wish them to be, and to fulfill our utmost potential is what meditation offers. Meditation allows for new thoughts which lead to new actions and that leads to more possibilities.
