Learning Activities for Kids During Christmas Break

Keep Their Minds Active While Their Out of School

Jeanne Marie Kerns
During Christmas break the last thing a child wants to do is feel like they are at school. Without them knowing, you can keep their mind sharp and ready to go with just a few fun activities. Take a look below at some of the suggestions you can choose from to keep your child's mind alert and focused for the second half of the school year.

Arts & Crafts. Buying simple arts and crafts can get a child's mind going for hours. Painting ceramics, drawing pictures of Christmas, making a Christmas wreath, even making an old fashion popcorn string to go around the tree can help your child keep busy. Imagination is the key to learning for young children.

Bake With Your Children. Although your children will have no idea that you are teaching them, baking is an excellent way to keep them learning while they are on Christmas break. Let them read the instructions out loud and handle all the measurements for you. That way along with learning to cook, they will also be sharpening up on their reading and math skills.

Simple Card Games. Kids love to play games, and that does not exclude card games. Play games such as "Go-Fish" or " War" to help them with their math skills while on Christmas break. They will not even realize that you are tricking them into learning or sharpening their skills.

Good Old Fashion Hangman. You will love it, and so will your children. Get everyone involved for this Christmas activity. Use a Christmas theme to make it even better. Your children will have fun and not even realize that you are helping them with their spelling at a time when they think their on break from school.

Christmas Puzzles. Go and buy some in-expensive holiday puzzles for your children to do. If they are bored and are wanting to do something, this is one thing that will keep them busy for quite sometime. Not only will they be quiet, they will be concentrating on finishing the puzzle, which in turn keeps their mind working at a normal pace.

Read a Book Together. If you want something that will help your child's mind stay active during Christmas break, one of the easiest ways to do that is by reading a book with them. Sure, they will not read it by themselves, but they will sit down and read it with you. Take turns reading paragraphs and looking at the illustrations in the book. Let them add a few extra lines if they want to. You can even have them make up their own Christmas story. Either way, instead of sitting in front of a computer or video games, this activity will help them learn.

Take one of the suggestions or take all, either way, your child will be learning while at home on Christmas break.
