First, it's okay to be choosy. This is one of the absolute best ways to increase your productivity. If you form good quality relationships with other businesses that offer products or services which go well together with yours, you could easily find more referrals than you would get on your own. A good networking circle happens when the customer's needs can be met by several companies withing the same network.
Next, the people you ally yourself with should not be your competitors. It sounds simple enough, but too many businesses don't keep this in mind when joining with other companies, and pay for it in the end. The doctor could partner with a clinic, but will the patients someday determine they don't really need a regular doctor? They might conclude that they only need to go to the clinic when they get sick.
Determine why it is you want to network, and what you hope to accomplish by doing it. Many networks have meetings where you can discover new strategies for your business. If you're more interested in contacts than strategies and just want to learn about business in general, then look for a group that concentrates on more social occasions than formal business meetings.
Networking goes better in groups. If you're doing B2B networking without the assistance of a group, you should contact the individual business owners. Invite them each out for lunch or other social event. If you're looking into a group setting, ask to join for a single meeting before deciding to ally yourself with them. Are they supportive or competitive? Do they have a clear leadership? Are they organized, or is it a more informal environment?
Lastly, collect all the data you can. Do some research ahead of time to find out what companies will be the most beneficial to your own, then either call them or drop by for a visit and start forging a strong business relationship. This will be a time-saver in the end for you, because you'll be building relationships with people that you know will help you and you can help them. The last thing you need to do is waste an evening in a group that ultimately won't be able to help your business.
