Championship Chess has added another school to the roster of chess clubs in Metro Atlanta. Morris Brandon Elementary School in Atlanta now has an after school chess club in the after-school program and it drew 60 students who applied to their program. Championship Chess is obviously a program that has a great appeal to area residents. Over the last few years, over 800 students in public and private school all over the metro Atlanta area now being coached by this organization. But this also includes the counties of Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas and Fulton and Gwinnett counties. Championship Chess introduces the game to children as young as 5 and 6, using a giant chessboard, music CDs, and large bottles of different sizes to move around on the board as different chess pieces. It's a brilliant concept and really captures children's interest. Their players rank in the top Ten in the state and in the top One Hundred countrywide. Kid Chess has set its schedule for children's chess camps begin with registration on June 4-8 at Chess Place in East Cobb. The classes can be full day, morning, or afternoon only sessions. Children take to this game because they love playing games and they really love beating their parents. Every youngster gets a trophy at this group as encouragement to continue to play and learn. Chess actually can raise IQs and it definitely raises school grades. It also strengthens a child's patience and self-discipline, thus, it can improve overall behavior. The instructors with Kid Chess are absolutely incredible. Interested parents can register online or call 770-575-5802 to get details on registration and payment.
Emory has announced registration for its summer chess camp this year for June 17-24. Registrants must have a minimum USCF score of 925 to qualify for the camp. The American Chess School and Emory Chess Association have hosted this camp for six years. The American Chess School was formed by Dr. Dr. Robert Ferguson after studies which proved that instruction in chess "dramatically improved" the shoolwork of 7th and 8th -graders in Pennsylvania. Students play group games with their chess master, learn speed chess, practice daily tournament games with analysis and get other instruction. They also swim, play racketball, rockclimbing and other physical camping activities. Every child receives free evaluation from his/her chess master. Resident campers pay $809 if they meet the May 1st deadline. Commuting campers pay $579 if paid by the same date. Rooms are also available for adults who want to accompany children.
