Learning Facebook - How to Create a Friends List

B.J. Rychener
Facebook is quickly becoming one of the most powerful social networking sites on the net but for many the threat of harassment, identity theft, and loss of job or friends is prominent on the mind when considering joining a social networking site like Facebook.

Fortunately Facebook has a lot of settings to help protect you from this. Facebook has features that allow you not only to set up friends list but to limit how each of these groups to sees your Facebook page and what information they have access to.

For instance, you may not want your boyfriend's mother to see your night out pictures with the girls or your boss to see the mid-afternoon status updates about what you really did on your lunch break. And besides, as much as you would like to believe everyone cares what you do every second of the day, there are many people who don't care that you are having problems in a relationship or that you are waiting for the pizza delivery guy.

It is possible to directly grant or deny a single friend certain access but it is much easier and quicker to do it using a friend list.

First you will need to create these friend lists. This is done by clicking on "Friends" in the top center of the Facebook window. Once there you will see a button to "Create a New List". After clicking this button, a smaller window, called a dialog box, will pop up and you can name your new friends list and select the friends you would like to add. Then click "Create List" on the bottom right hand side of this window.

Your new friend's list is now active and a link to it will show on the left hand side of your friend's page. If it does not show immediately, try refreshing the page or clicking on "Friends" at the top of the Facebook window again. Do this as many times as you would like to create the friends lists you will need. Some of the more popular lists are Good Friends, Family, Co-Workers, School Friends, etc.

Now that you have created your friends lists you can limit access to your profile for these lists. But that is a lesson for a later day. Feel free to e-mail me your Facebook questions.
