Learning Management Systems: Why Schools Need a LMS

Cindy Wright
Many people do not know the value of a Learning Management System (LMS). The reasons schools should consider using a learning management system to deliver courses range from the ability to reach students who cannot get to the physical school, and boosting special needs students' chances to learn to keep up with the fastest growing trend in K-12 education today. But first, it is important to understand what an LMS is.

A Learning Management System is a teaching system, usually on a large scale that enables the management and delivery of courses to students. A LMS is not installed on individual computers. LMS's are a school-wide system accessed by all teachers and students. Most Learning Management Systems are web-based, and they are able to be used by the teachers and students anytime and anywhere to access learning content, and for administrative needs. A LMS generally offer access monitoring, dynamic reporting, grade management and other powerful tools. This empowers both the educator and administrator without the need for piles of paper.

LMS's provide a avenue through which educators can interact with student's dynamically, without proximity being a factor. If students cannot get to school, they can still learn. Learning Management System's are usually web-based. This allows any user to make full use of the online learning process, despite their location or their computer's operating system, etc.

Being web-based means no expensive software or time-consuming hardware upgrades. This translates to ultimate access for financially struggling schools. Any institution can afford to provide IQ-ity as an LMS. An LMS offers community features, allowing the user to interact with and feel as if he or she is truly a part of the school or institution with other students.

Schools save on the cost of textbooks, by using a LMS, all of the courses and tests are online in the LMS, students complete their assignments online and districts do not need as many textbooks. They can retain students lost to charter schools. With a LMS student's can still attend classes through your district from home. Some students, whether it is because of health reasons or some other reason, can not attend a traditional brick and mortar school. With a LMS you can provide an education for these students and keep them in your district. Study Island and IQ-ity is couple examples of Learning Management Systems they have an Ohio Graduation Test study guide and practice tests for the Ohio Graduation Test.
