If you are contemplating this procedure, one of the most important points you need to know is that it is not intended to be a quick, simple way of dealing with excess weight. It requires effort on your own part. A second important point is that there is a legitimate reason for everything that is required of you. Your physician is not trying to annoy you or make your life difficult. He or she wants you to be happy with the results.
First, a reputable physician will tell you that you must lose a specific amount of weight before the surgery. There are two reeasons for this. Your doctor wants your body to be in as good condition as possible prior to the surgery, and also for you to begin new, healthier patterns which will serve you well afterward. He may also advise you to begin a moderate exercise routine.
Second, your doctor will review your unhealthy habits, and request that you give them up. If you want a healthy body after your procedure, you can start by giving up tobacco, caffeine, and other products which do not promote overall good health. In fact, some products can affect the safety of the procedure itself, and even result in complications afterward. The foods, beverages, prescription medications, and over-the-counter medications you use on a regular basis may be radically changed.
Third, your expectations are taken into consideration. If you are to be completely satisfied, you cannot view it as a quick fix to an unhealthy lifestyle, or a way to transform your entire life. This is why your physician will recommend counseling. You need to be fully aware of what you can expect, and what you cannot. A couch potato who has no interest in making adjustments to his lifestyle is not a good candidate. The person who is ready and willing to take on his own role to improving his health and appearance is the person who will be satisifed with the results.
