The cost of learning how to play tennis is very inexpensive when you do it through the use of videos or Internet playing lessons. On the other end of the scale, a professional tennis trainer will be your most expensive option, although it will provide a hands-on experience that none of the other options can give you.
If you go the tennis instructor route, look at hiring someone who has played the game quite a bit, either from tennis playing experience or teaching experience. The best bet is finding one that has done both. During this training, you will begin to learn the various swings and when to use each different swing in a game situation. In the beginning, tennis can often seem intimidating because of the physical activity that is involved, along with the need to have a very fast reaction to every situation. Don't worry though, after taking a few playing lessons, you'll be much more familiar with the game and how to play it. Having patience is a good thing to have when playing tennis.
Before hiring any instructor, it would be a good idea to learn some of the basics of tennis first. Gain some working knowledge of the game before beginning the actual lessons. Purchase a good book, video or go online and do some research. Any of these methods will give you an introduction to the game, the proper way to grip and swing the tennis racket, etc.
Then, when you, as a new tennis player, start taking lessons, you'll have more confidence and will impress your instructor by knowing a lot more than most others. Not to mention, anything that you can learn beforehand may end up saving you some money on the actual lessons.
With that being said, it's still alright to take tennis lessons even if you are the definition of a true beginner. No matter if you have never held a tennis racket or a tennis ball before, there is nothing to fear. A good tennis instructor will help you learn the game from scratch if that's what you need. During your lessons, it will always be a good idea to have access to a tennis court so you could practice a little in between lessons.
Tennis instructors will either work one-on-one with their students, or teach a small group at one time. The choice is yours as to how you'd like to learn. Those who prefer to learn as much as possible, but without doing so with hands-on training may opt for online lessons. The only drawback is that this method doesn't give you any actual practice, which can be a big point.
If your friends or family play a lot of tennis they may be able to help give you some tips and even help you play the game without taking tennis lessons from a pro. No matter how you go about it, tennis is a great game and a lot more fun when you take the time to get some basic training.
