Learning the Rules of Cruising: Vacation on a Cruise Ship This Summer

S. B.
Have you been dreaming of taking your first fun-filled vacation aboard one of the many gorgeous cruise ships of the world? Well, before you pack your bags - or book your accommodations - take some time to learn a few cruising rules that can save you both time and money.

Look for Last Minute Deals

It may seem tempting to go the traditional route and seek out a travel agent to book your first cruise. And while this isn't a bad idea, you might want to save yourself some extra money by checking the prices of cruise vacations that are setting sail within a few weeks of your search date - that is, if you have a flexible schedule. Many cruise lines lower their prices a couple of weeks before departure to sell all of their cabins, which means you might be able to benefit from some great deals. In some cases, you may even be able to take advantage of a 60 percent price reduction. So check it out. It might be worth your while.

Fill Out Your Luggage Tags

Once you decide on your desired package and book your vacation, the cruise line will send itinerary details and luggage tags. When they arrive, it may be tempting to simply look through the itinerary and brochures without filling out your luggage tags. But the sooner you get this step appropriately completed, the better. The luggage tags are the only routers the cruising staff will have to guide your bags to your cabin. So unless you like the idea of chasing down your luggage for hours, your best bet is to get this step taken care of as soon as possible.

Make Sure You Have Your Passport

Hopefully you have taken this step into consideration before you have even thought about booking a cruise, but if not, then definitely take the steps necessary to get your passport in hand before your cruise departs. The major of cruise ships travel outside of United States territory, requiring that you show proof that you are eligible to leave. So definitely make sure you have your passport, as it would definitely be unfortunate to go through all of the preparations only to realize you aren't allowed to travel.

Don't Get to the Ship Too Early

It is a common misconception that if you arrive to the boat early, you will get to board early. Contrary to this belief, the ship will be prepping for your trip until its designated boarding time. Even worse, there will be no entertainment planned for those who arrived early. So to save yourself the unnecessary boredom, simply get there at the time listed in your itinerary.

By taking time to plan your trip with care, you can ensure that your first cruise be a smooth and successful one.
