Learning Spanish-Methods that Stick

Whether you're learning Spanish for school, your job, or just to have another language under your belt, you'll want to know the methods that will help you to retain the fundamentals of the Spanish language in a way that is interesting and effective. Here are a few tips that you may want to try if you're trying to learn Spanish.

Expose yourself to Spanish as much as possible.

Even though some of the words that you hear in Spanish may not make sense to you, the more you are exposed to the language, the more you will be able to figure out what words and phrases mean. So, tune your radio dial to the Spanish station in your area, watch Spanish television, and try to read directions or product labels if a Spanish version is available. This way, you will become familiar with the way that Spanish words and sentences are written, and the Spanish that you may have to read in a textbook won't seem so foreign. You can even watch a few Spanish cartoons, such as Dora the Explorer and Go Diego Go-if you're into cartoons. This will also help you to start speaking Spanish more naturally quicker than you think.

Speak Spanish as much as you can.

Whether you're at a restaurant, grocery store, or at your local mechanic shop, chances are that you'll have the opportunity to speak Spanish to an employee while you're there. There are so many Hispanic businesses in the U.S. today, that many business owners will be happy to see that you are attempting to speak their language, and will be happy to help. Just like with English, the more you practice, the better you will become-you'll even learn some new words along the way.

Study-in your own way.

Okay, so the reality of learning a new language is that you're going to have to study. You can do this by reading a textbook or two, using flashcards, talking to others who are fluent in the language, and exposing yourself to Spanish media. It's also a good idea to read and write Spanish as much as you can so that Spanish will become second nature. Singing a few Spanish songs, or translating your favorite songs will also give you a familiarity with Spanish through music that will help the verb conjugations and phrases to stick out in your mind. You can also check out sites like www.freetranslation.com or www.rosettastone.com for great materials you can purchase and practice with online while you're learning and studying.
