Leather Lamp Base Cover Craft Project

Ann Siper
This leather lamp cover project is a fun and easy way to cover an old or outdated lamp base. The best lamps for covering with leather are lamps with a square or cylinder base.

You can try this leather lamp base craft on any style lamp, but fitting will take a little more work. The look of this leather lamp base is expensive, but you can do this fun craft for pennies!

To Make This Leather Lamp Base You Will Need:

Leather

Leather

Twine

Upholstery Needle

Scissors

Lamp Base

To get started you will need to measure how tall your lamp is. Next, measure the circumference.

Now, on to the fabric. I like to recycle used leather for this project, but you can buy new leather if you wish. If you go the recycled leather route try looking at local flea markets, thrift stores, and yard sales to find leather clothing that can be cut up and recycled. A damaged piece can be made into something awesome!

Now, Cut out a piece of leather fabric to fit your lamp base. This needs to be the measurements you made, plus 4 inches to the length an d4 inches added to the width.

Now, cut this piece of leather into 4 vertical strips. Simply divide the width by 4 can d cut them.

You will be binding these four strips back together using other materials to create a fun base with lots of visual interest.

To reusable these four strips of leather you have a few options. My personal favorite eyes to take one strip and lay it pattern side up on yoru table. Take another strip and lay it face side down on the first on. Sew one vertical edge shut.

Continue this process until you get a cylinder of leather. If you go this route be sure to use a heavy weight thread in your machine along with a jeans or upholstery needle. This is a great chance to add an accent color with your thread.

Another option is to take thick twine, like a good jute twine and sew the four slats back together. You can simply create any stitch pattern you want not the outside.

Finally, for a more industrial look why not install grommets along the sis of each strip of leather. Use twine to sew them together like lacing shoes!

Slip this leather r lamp base cover on to your lamp, replace the shade, and you have a whole new look.
