According to Oncor, an electric distributer, although it may be tempting for one to trim their trees on their own, one should leave the trimming to the experts.

As of this year in Dallas, Texas, Oncor Electric Delivery customers have not had it easy when it comes to the growing season . Throughout the past 90 days, showers throughout May, June, and July have brought more troubles to electric customers than any good. When thinking of these Pre-summer showers, one may think flowers and beautiful scenery, but that is not the case.

Texas has had double the rainfall and cooler temperatures as a result, causing their growth season to spurt dramatically. During the average growing season in Texas, the average expected growth of trees if 2 feet. However, this year it has been nearing and surpassing 6 feet. Normally, by this time of the season as August has arrived, trees, bushes and other vegetation are normally trying to survive the summer heat, but this year they are still growing!!

This does not seem to be to bad of an issue until trimming trees comes into terms with this growing season. If you are considering trimming trees near a residence, always be aware of power lines. Though home owners are indeed responsible for making sure wires from the pole to their meter are free of trees and limbs, one should always be careful and think twice. Should you call an expert to do this work? Should you call up the electric company to temporarily shut off the power?

Every year, in Texas and everywhere, pruning and climbing trees near power lines result in several deaths and injuries that could be prevented. Be aware that you may think the job looks easy, but by simply trimming a limb that falls onto a utility line, surges, power outages, fires, and many other damages and injuries can occur.

Oncor has provided the following safety tips as the growth season continues and as tree trimming is necessary.

1)When trimming near a power line, always call up your provider first and have them temporarily shut off the power. Usually it is a small fee but it is definitely worth the safety.

2) If you are a little nervous, just hire and expert. You are better off spending a little money and being safe then risking your life.

3)If a limb or branch happens to fall on a line, do not try and get it off. You should never come into contact with the wires. Simply call up your provider.

4)If a power line falls, keep people away and call 911.
