Leave-In Conditioner for Gorgeous Hair in Winter

While we tend to remember to care for our hair during the summer months, it is essential to give our hair the same amount of TLC during the winter even if we plan on keeping it hidden under caps and hats until the spring. Depending on where you live, winter can be cold and brutal on the skin and hair. Harsh winds, dry heat from heaters, static, and humidity are all sure fire enemies for a lovely coif, and keeping a cute knit cap over it is not enough to keep it healthy.

Our hair can lose as much moisture in the cold as it can during the hot months of summer, leaving it frizzy and stripped. One of the best ways to ensure that your hair stays pliable, healthy and ready for anything is to keep it hydrated from root to tip. According to hair stylists the world over, the best way to keep hair healthy and moisturized during the cold months is to use a high quality leave-in conditioner.

Unlike traditional conditioners that tend to be thick and can weigh your hair down if not properly rinsed out, leave-in conditioners are lighter and rarely oil based. Some leave-in conditioners even come with the added benefit of SPF to protect your tresses from sun damage and fading which is perfect if you enjoy outdoor winter sports. Depending on how dry and/or damaged your hair is, you can opt to shampoo your hair, skip the usual conditioner, and go straight for the leave-in conditioner before styling your hair, or you can use both the rinse-out and leave-in conditioners for extra moisture and protection.

It's essential to use only a small dollop of leave-in conditioner and to concentrate most of it on your ends. Using too much of the conditioner will leave your hair looking limp and if used to heavily along the roots could create the appearance of a greasy scalp. Since your ends get the least amount of moisture and are the most prone to damage, giving them a little extra conditioning is always beneficial and will help in keeping those pesky fly-away hairs at bay.

Another benefit of using a leave-in conditioner is that it creates a protective barrier between your hair and any heated styling tools you may use. This is particularly good to know since most people tend to use their blow dyers more during cold weather then warmer weather.

There is a wonderfully wide array of leave-in conditioning products on the market, so finding the one that is just right for you and your hair type is simple. In a pinch you can also use a small amount of hand lotion to run through your locks and tame frizz while giving it added moisture and protection from the elements.

Giving your hair that little extra moisture oomph during the harsh winter months is an absolute must and your hair will thank you for it. Once spring and summer roll around, your hair will be healthy and ready to be let loose.
