Leaving it Behind

Donna Cavanagh

Sometimes, we need to take a step back
and look at the path we have traveled
Goals achieved; bonds we have made
Hearts broken and dreams unraveled

For some, the world has been too hard
It seems easier to leave it all behind
Forget the lives touched by a word
Forget the hearts that proved so kind

At times we want to say goodbye
And walk a new path on our own
Hands become too hard to hold
We think it best to go alone

Alone may look like the easier path
But we learn it is a prison all the same
No one to embrace; no one to turn to
No one cares enough to call out our name

It doesn't matter about the past
We have to trust in the here and now
Bonds do bend but they are not always broken
And hearts find a way to mend somehow
