No, LeBron James won't do that for a number of reasons. Probably the most important one being that just like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, King James hopes to be a sports figure that transcends all, and public outcries that come across as whiny and high-maintenance won't exactly help him sell sneakers. Kobe Bryant on the other hand, has been at the lowest of the lows when it comes to his public persona and relationship with major marketers, so he probably could care less about how his thoughts and opinions are portrayed.
There is also the fact that LeBron James doesn't have to clamor for a big trade, start demanding things and threatening to leave, because he is only 23-years of age. Kobe is going on 30, and he is in the prime of his career. Him not having talent around him now is wasting a pivotal period in his career when he should be maximizing his basketball potential. Fortunately, for Lebron, he has some time to waste.
LeBron won't even be 26 until late in 2010, and it won't be until maybe that point when we can really say that LeBron James doesn't get any better than this, and even then he still may grow as a basketball player. So LeBron is just chillin'. Sure, he has said that he wouldn't mind help. When asked about Jason Kidd, of course he said that he would love to have him on the Cavs. Did you see how well they performed in the FIBA Basketball tournament last summer? They are good together. Really good.
But as far as crying for a player in an act of desperation, LeBron James just hasn't reached that point. And he shouldn't be at that point. He should be far too naïve to think he needs immediate help. Afterall, he just went to the NBA Finals at the age of 22. So if in his mind he is thinking that he will be back to Finals many more times to come, who could blame him if he has no sense of urgency about building a team around him?
However, the Cavaliers need to have a sense of urgency. LeBron James has proven to them that he is the player that can bring the glory to Cleveland. Sure, he didn't deliver in 2007, but it was him against Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker. He is not supposed to win that battle. However, if Cleveland could put one more superstar alongside LeBron, along with a decent supporting cast, you know and I know that LeBron is more than capable of becoming an NBA champion.
If instead, the Cavs decide to twiddle their thumbs and let players like J-Kidd, Shaquille O'Neal, Pau Gasol, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett go from team to team without so much as making a move to bring in somebody of note to Cleveland, there is an expiration date on LeBron's services. His contract is up in 2010. It will be up that summer, and LeBron will be 25 and looking to start establishing his place in the history of the NBA.
It's a well-known fact that LeBron James has quite the relationship with a man that goes by the name of Jay-Z. New York City is synonymous with Jay-Z, just as basketball is synonymous with the city that is labeled the Mecca of the sport itself. The New Jersey Nets, partially owned by Jay-Z, are planning to move to New York City in 2010. Not that I am insinuating anything. I'm just demanding the Cavs trade their naivety for so common sense before somebody swoops up their only tradable entity.
