Lee DeWyze Has Sinatra-like Performance on "American Idol"

Despite having singing great Harry Connick Jr. offer to arrange the songs for the final five "American Idol" contestants as well as mentor them, the majority of the contestants Tuesday during Frank Sinatra night had merely average performances.

Ironically enough, the contestant that has been bagged on for most of the season, especially by judge Simon Cowell, for not having enough personality on stage is the one that had the most Sinatra-like swagger and presence on the stage this night. Lee DeWyze sang "That's Life" and had the standout performance of the night. He looked more than comfortable on stage, he looked like he had been performing that song for years. He even had some cool swagger to his performance. Judge Ellen Degeneres said if this was the final night, he would have won the competition.

However, as good as his performance was, to say that isn't necessarily a compliment. Everyone else, except for Mike Lynche, was just average. Lynche sang "The Way You Look Tonight," and did a pretty good job. He dressed the part of Sinatra and his vocals were good. The only problem with Lynche is he sounds much the same week after week and I'm not sure how that would play on the radio.

The other three - Aaron Kelly, Casey James and Crystal Bowersox - had okay performances. None of them were terrible, but none were great, either. When you're talking about the final five, you kind of expect to be wowed each time. Ideally, you'd like to be sitting there going, "Oh man, I thought that last one was great, but this one is REALLY great!" There was none of that tonight. By the time the really great performance hit, host Ryan Seacrest was reviewing the others because the show was over.

For what it's worth, Kelly sang "Fly Me to the Moon," while James sang "Blue Skies" and Bowersox chose "Summer Wind." Connick was asked his opinion only after James' performance. His response was that James sang it better in warm ups but knocked it out of the park then.

As for Connick, he may have been the most entertaining aspect of the show. He was funny and charming, constantly cracking jokes during the mentoring sessions to try to put the contestants at ease. He also had pretty good advice for them.

As for who will go home, that's a pretty tough call. Likely it will be Aaron Kelly, though I'd be worried if I was Casey James.
