Next out to entertain us was the reigning American Idol, Kris Allen singing "Truth," looking as cute as a button.
A montage of Simon's "professional" moments on the show, interacting with contestants was shared with the warning that more was yet to come.
Siobhan Magnus and Aaron Kelly sang the opening to "How Deep is Your Love," then the 2 remaining Bee Gees, Barry and Robin, came out. I was like wow! Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb! Wow. I miss Maurice. Lucky Aaron and Siobhan got to come back and finish the song with the awesome Gibb brothers. Oh, yes, they can do more of this the rest of the night. I love it!
Michael Lynche came out singing the Doobie Brothers hit, "Takin' It To the Streets," which was an introduction for Michael McDonald. Wowza!
Comedian and actor, Dane Cook, accompanied himself on the guitar while singing "Simon Said." incorporating some more Simon Cowell insults. Disqualified contestants came out on the stage. Was that the twins Derrell and Terrell Brittenum from Season Five I spied? I thought they were in jail.
Lacey Brown came out next singing "Beautiful," joined by Didi Benami, and Katie Stevens. This was all sounding terrible until Siobhan Magnus chimed in and Crystal Bowersox also was quite an improvement. They then morphed into "Stronger" and introduced Christina Aguilera. I don't know what she was singing to be honest.
Lee DeWyze began the intro to "I Can't Go For That," joined by the other guys, so yeah, by now I know Hall and Oates are coming and yeah, wow. Just say wow for me from now on. They morphed into "Maneater." Hall and Oates performed "You Make My Dreams Come True" with the American Idols guys backing them up. It must have been worth being on Idol this season just for this, just to sing ooh, ooh, ooh, behind Daryl Hall and John Oates.
We were then taken back to Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio to show all the excited Crystal Bowersox fans rooting for their homegirl. Crystal came out next singing Alanis Morrisette's "It's Like Rain." Alanis herself came out and sang "You Oughta Know" with Crystal.
Carrie Underwood was up next performing her latest, "Undo It." No Idol contestants were used in the performance of this song, but Miss Underwood's knees were bent practically throughout the whole number even when she was walking around, giving her a strange crouching look. Ryan then informed one and all that Kara DioGuardi co-wrote the song with Carrie.
Kris Allen said Crystal and Lee "had no idea" of the big surprise in store for them next. Well, the way they under-reacted when they were given the keys to their new 2011 Ford Fiestas, I think they did.
Casey James then performed "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," when he was joined onstage by Bret Michaels. Can you believe this? Well, once again, this moment must have made up for every crappy comment this season, even the infamous "lamb" one. Great to see Bret looking good and performing live so soon after his recent life-threatening health problems.
Lee DeWyze got to perform a medley of hits with Chicago next, including ""Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is," "If You Leave Me Now" and "Twenty-Five or Six To Four." Great stuff. Back in Illinois, everyone in Mt. Prospect turned out at the Village Green to cheer Lee on.
More Simon moments and "Pants on the Ground." You have to love it, especially when you see it everyday: "going downtown with your pants on the ground." William Hung came out to join in the merriment. This was followed by some more Simon moments and the return of Paula Abdul, who cracked on Simon and told Ryan "I want my lip gloss back." He did not seem very amused. Paula said "American Idol" will go on and a montage of Simon moments was shown with "My Way" playing in the background.
Former American Idol winners were up next singing "Together We Are One.". Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia, Carrie, Jordin, Taylor, Kris, all dressed in black. Only David Cook could not appear due to a charity event in Kansas City. A slew of contestants from various seasons came out to join in the song, dressed in white, as Paula sat in Simon's lap. Syesha Mercado from the same season as Cook tweeted that she is in Tokyo on the Dreamgirls tour (and also sent Lee congratulations). It was fun to see a lot of the contestants turn out for Simon's last show. Simon was called up on the stage to speak. He was feeling a lot more emotional than he thought he would and said the show would go on. He said he would even miss Ryan and told the audience and viewers it didn't really matter who replaced him, they are the real judges of "American Idol."
The Top 12 were up next, joined by Janet Jackson who took over the lead. I think the name of this is "Nothing" Janet Jackson also did a production number of "Nasty."
A live blogger over on Speakeasy is saying that this is a "boring finale" and "just a conveyor belt of aging stars that people may or may not remember." Well, another thing that Lloyd Price talked about when we talked about Casey James is the lack of respect today's artists and their fans show the stars that came up and set the stage for them in the 20th century. And this is so true. So, disrespectful blogging whelp, show some respect -- do you think the American Idols would have anything to sing if not for the "aging stars?" As if to punctuate that sentiment, out came Joe Cocker, to sing "I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends" with Lee and Crystal. This will be an incredible memory for them to cherish the rest of their lives.
It was a great finale to an otherwise crappy season.
The envelope was then brought out and Ryan said "after the nationwide vote, I can now tell you the winner of American Idol 2010 is Lee DeWyze."
No, I am not going to rant and rave (only so I won't have to write "I won't rant and rave" 100 times). Voters choice, yes, but not voters who were voting because he was the best singer because he just wasn't. Lee said he has never been happier in his life. I'd be embarrassed if I was him. At least Kris Allen had the decency to say Adam Lambert should have won.

Post a CommentThis was a great finale! I loved it! Crystal will be quite successful musically if she makes up her mind she wants to do it. Nice article.
Didn't see that coming. We have a lovely parting gift for you Mr. Cowell, your guy won.
I'm glad American Idol is over! Seemed like a long, long season to me. Think I will turn off my TV until Fall! Great review Val!
I was a little upset at this too. Sorry to take away from Lee's win, but it was clear that Bowersox was the far more talented contestant.
