Legacy

E. Hart
Who am I, is the question you will ask -
Seems a natural query for a lad your size
but you are apt to ask this question more
than most your age.
The remnant of your umbilical cord holds mystery
and pain as
someday you may decide to seek out its ancestry,
you will wonder why she did it;
you might have moments of anger and despair
because she signed you away.

The woman in the shadows
holds a tender spot in our hearts.
Perhaps she conceived in love,
adultery might have been the triangle,
promiscuity possibly the force.
we only know her act was our greatest gift,
a chance to love and see a young soul bloom,
for my womb was empty and dead.

No son, do not become infected with anger or
embedded with bitter tears,
for we love her as much as we love you.
If you feel the need to seek her out
to clear your mind of misconcieved injustice,
we will understand,
but go to her knowing
you meet as strangers -
not as flesh.
