Legacy Writing for Grandparents: Writing Elders' Life Stories as Gifts

Topsy Krett
Our grandparents play a vital role in shaping who we are in life, so it makes sense that when the holidays arrive, we need to think of gift ideas for our grandparents that will make a difference in their lives.

One of the greatest gifts grandparents can receive is a contribution to a legacy writing. A legacy writing is putting down, on paper, the narration of somebody's life. This can help immortalize them, and is also a treat for current and the future family members.

But maybe you don't want to do a legacy writing. That's fine too. When it is time to brainstorm shopping ideas for your grandparents, remember that the gifts do not need to be complex or expensive. In fact, simply shopping for grandparents, to let them know you care, is one of the simplest ways to make them happy. The primary thing to keep in mind is that, for a grandparent, just spending money is not always the most sincere option. That's one of the beautiful things about grandparents, they tend to be extremely caring, and easy to please.

Grandparents love gifts given from the heart. This means crafts or gifts formed without spending any money. For example, instead of buying a bouquet of flowers and giving them to your children's Grandma, a specially selected bunch of wildflowers would be more meaningful to her. And instead of a store-bought greeting card, a hand-made or written card would be more expressive of the child's true feelings towards his or her grandparents.

If your child is old enough to read, help to find them a simple book or story that can connect them with their grandparents, and encourage them read to them. If they are a little grown-up, they could even write a poem for their grandparents. These ideas don't cost you anything, but it means the world to your kid's eldest relatives.

If your child is too young to be involved in such projects, provide them a simple task. Tell them to color a picture and give it to their grandparents, or get them to glue macaroni on paper and create an image for them. Even something as simple as writing their names, when the child can spell them, can be as inspiring as any store-bought gift.

One of the reasons that grandparents are so unique and deserving of celebration is that they are always excited by the little things done by their grandchildren. A simple stick-figure drawing, a complex patchwork quilt, or anything in between, will certainly be seen as amazing in a child's grandparent's eyes.

The main reason behind Grandparents Day is to show the significance of our elders to younger generations. The feeling of enhancing the bond between child and grandparent in a respectful manner is one that will not be forgotten. It's only fair that they receive a gift from the heart on that fantastic holiday, or any other holiday, for that matter.
